01 - THE WORD
The act of grinding by hand
研
研ぎ is the Japanese word for sharpening, grinding, polishing by hand. In Japan the word belongs to blades.
Togi is the final stage of swordmaking. The specialist who performs it, the 研師, trains a decade or more before he is trusted to work alone. His task is not to make a blade sharp. It is to refine the shape and reveal what the steel already holds.
A golf head is not a sword. But the problem is the same one. A forging arrives thick, heavy and approximate. What it becomes depends entirely on what a person removes, and on knowing when to stop.

How a TO-GI head is finished

Four stages, one pair of hands, one head at a time.
The forging
Work begins with a raw forging: correct in mass, deliberately generous in shape. Nothing about the sole, the leading edge or the neck is settled yet.
Sole and leading edge
The sole is taken down and shaped by hand, the leading edge brought back until the head sits and enters the way it should. This decides how the club feels through turf.
Relief and neck blend
Relief is cut where the head needs to release, and the neck is blended into the topline until the transition disappears. Measured by eye, corrected by feel.
The last look
The head is checked in the hand and in the light, and only leaves the bench when the shape is right. Nothing gets corrected after this point.

TO-GI is a way of finishing, not a single model. Any KYOEI head can be taken down this road: muscle backs, cavity backs, wedges.
