A forging arrives thick, heavy and approximate. What it becomes depends entirely on what a person removes, and on knowing when to stop.

TOGI 研ぎ is the Japanese word for that work: sharpening, grinding, polishing by hand.

TO-GI is a KYOEI head taken from raw forging to finished club by hand, by one grinder in Japan. Not a machine finish with a hand check at the end. The sole, the leading edge, the relief and the neck are all shaped by eye and by feel, one head at a time.

Because the work is done by hand, no two heads come off the wheel the same.

THIS SET

Model: 605 MB TO-GI, #4 to PW, 7 pieces. The adjustable weight muscle back, smaller through the blade, topline and sole than the 705, with a weight port that tunes the head without changing a line of the shape.

Finish: Black Satin. An even, low sheen black with no mirror to it and no flat deadness either. It holds a soft light along the muscle that shows where the metal rises and falls, without ever throwing glare. Of the black finishes this is the middle position, darker and calmer than the mirror, warmer and more alive than the matte. The most understated finish KYOEI offers on this head.

Face shape: Standard Toe. Full and rounded, finishing in one continuous radius rather than a corner. A slightly longer, fuller profile at address with more shape to aim against, and mass spread evenly across the head rather than carried high in the toe, which keeps the centre of gravity nearer the middle of the face and the feel consistent across the hitting area.

Sole grind: Semi V. A soft V ridge down the centre of the sole that runs out hard just past the middle, so the front half narrows toward the leading edge while the trailing half stays full. The head enters on a line rather than a flat plate and cuts in without bouncing, and the riding surface set back behind the taper keeps the leading edge out of the ground on a steeper delivery.

Leading edge: Rolled into the front of the V and blended, sitting just off the ground at address. Opening the face rolls the V onto its heel side and drops the edge, so the head sits down on a tight lie with the face laid open.

Relief: Heel and toe relief through the scoring irons for freedom to open the face around the green, with the trailing half of the sole left full.

Neck: Blended into the topline until the transition disappears. One continuous line at address.

Notes on this set: If the mirror black is a statement and the matte black is a tool, the black satin is the one you stop noticing after two rounds, which is the highest compliment you can pay a finish. Standard toe and Semi V sole make it the most adaptable of the black 605 builds, comfortable out of soft turf and firm, and easy to open up around the green. The right set for a player who wants a dark compact muscle back and nothing about it drawing attention.
