A forging arrives thick, heavy and approximate. What it becomes depends entirely on what a person removes, and on knowing when to stop.

TOGI 研ぎ is the Japanese word for that work: sharpening, grinding, polishing by hand.

TO-GI is a KYOEI head taken from raw forging to finished club by hand, by one grinder in Japan. Not a machine finish with a hand check at the end. The sole, the leading edge, the relief and the neck are all shaped by eye and by feel, one head at a time.

Because the work is done by hand, no two heads come off the wheel the same.

THIS SET

Model: 605 MB TO-GI, #4 to PW, 7 pieces. The adjustable weight muscle back built on the smaller TO-GI footprint, with a weight port for tuning the head without touching the profile.

Finish: Matte Gray Mist. The flattest finish in the line. A fine even mist in a cool mid grey with no sheen at all and no direction to it, so the head returns almost nothing to the eye. In hard sun there is no hot spot anywhere on the topline, and under cloud the head holds a single even tone instead of going dull in patches. It is the finish for a player who does not want to see the club at all, only the ball.

Face shape: Standard Toe. Full and rounded, finishing in one continuous curve rather than a corner. Slightly longer and fuller through the profile at address with more shape to line up to, and mass spread across the head rather than carried high in the toe, so the centre of gravity sits nearer the middle of the face.

Sole grind: Semi V. A soft V ridge down the centre of the sole, tapering off hard just past the middle so the front half narrows toward the leading edge while the trailing half stays full. Entering on a line rather than a flat plate, the head cuts in without bouncing, and the riding surface set back behind the taper keeps the leading edge out of the ground on a steeper delivery.

Leading edge: Rolled into the front of the V and blended, sitting just off the ground at address. Laying the face open rolls the V onto its heel side and drops the edge, so the head still sits down from a tight lie.

Relief: Heel and toe relief through the scoring irons for freedom to open the face, with the trailing half of the sole left full.

Neck: Blended into the topline until the transition disappears. One continuous line at address.

Notes on this set: A matte grey mist over a hand ground head is a quiet choice and a confident one. There is no shine anywhere to flatter the shaping, so the profile has to stand on its own, and on the compact 605 it does. Paired with the standard toe and the Semi V sole this is the most workmanlike set in the line, built to be used rather than looked at. Worth noting that a flat mist finish will show wear and bag marks sooner than a plated one, which most players who choose it consider part of the appeal.
