A forging arrives thick, heavy and approximate. What it becomes depends entirely on what a person removes, and on knowing when to stop.

TOGI 研ぎ is the Japanese word for that work: sharpening, grinding, polishing by hand.

TO-GI is a KYOEI head taken from raw forging to finished club by hand, by one grinder in Japan. Not a machine finish with a hand check at the end. The sole, the leading edge, the relief and the neck are all shaped by eye and by feel, one head at a time.

Because the work is done by hand, no two heads come off the wheel the same.

THIS SET

Model: 605 MB TO-GI, #4 to PW, 7 pieces. The adjustable weight muscle back. Compact through the blade, topline and sole, with a weight port that tunes the head without altering the shape.

Finish: Matte Black Gunmetal. Flat black with a grey metallic undertone running through it, so it reads darker and harder than a satin black but never goes to a shine. There is no reflection off the topline at any angle and no glare to manage in bright sun. Against a green surface the head sits as a solid dark shape behind the ball, which is the strongest framing of any finish in the line.

Face shape: Standard Toe. The toe rolls away in one continuous radius instead of finishing on a corner, giving a slightly longer, fuller profile at address and more shape to align against. Mass sits distributed across the head rather than carried high in the toe, keeping the centre of gravity nearer the middle of the face and the feel even across the hitting area.

Sole grind: Semi V. A soft V through the centre of the sole that tapers off hard just past the middle, narrowing the front half toward the leading edge while the trailing half stays full. The head presents a line to the ground instead of a flat plate and cuts in cleanly. With the taper forward of centre the riding surface sits back, which keeps the leading edge clear on a steeper delivery without the head skipping.

Leading edge: Rolled into the front of the V and blended, sitting just off the ground at address. Open the face and the V rolls to its heel side, dropping the edge so the head sits down on a tight lie.

Relief: Heel and toe relief through the scoring irons, enough to open the face freely with the trailing half of the sole left intact.

Neck: Blended into the topline until the transition disappears. One continuous line from hosel to toe.

Notes on this set: The darkest and most matte of the 605 builds. Where the mirror black shows the grinder’s shaping in reflection, this one hides it and gives you outline instead, a hard black silhouette with the ball sitting against it. Standard toe and Semi V underneath keep it playable across turf conditions, so the finish is doing the work of making the set distinctive rather than the geometry. A matte black will pick up marks with use, and on this finish they show as lighter grey rather than bare steel.
